Manduria is a small town located at 79 s.l.m, in that area called Murge Tarantine. Thanks to its position, it enjoys a temperate and mild climate throughout the year. Known for its historical evidence as the Land of the Messapi, it was the northernmost portion of the entire territory known today as Salento but which in the past was the land inhabited by this ancient and proud people. Manduria has always been linked to its main vine Primitivo which arrived in this area about 3000 years ago. Some sources say that this vine arrived here from the other side of the Adriatic, by the hand of the Illyrians, people of the Balkan region dedicated to the cultivation of the vine.
In Manduria the production of this vine and therefore the production of the Primitivo di Manduria wine found its ideal location so much to be considered since ancient times one of the best wines produced in the whole Mediterranean. It was so good that it began to be marketed throughout the Mediterranean by the Phoenicians, ancient patrons of our coasts. When the Greeks subsequently began to colonize southern Italy (VII century BC), spreading their black-grape vines especially in Campania and Lucania, the Hellenian wine (precursor of Aglianico), although valuable, did not penetrate into Puglia. This is considered a strong sign of the existence of local black wine already produced with excellent results.
The name “Primitivo” derives from the early ripening that characterizes this grape, compared to the other varieties grown in Puglia. In fact, this black and sweet grape is harvested between the end of August and the first days of September.
A grape, the Primitivo, with such importance to occupy 3000 hectares of vineyards scattered in 18 municipalities that also touch the province of Taranto and that of Brindisi. Primitivo is a vine that finds its strength here in the red soils, calcareous and clayey of this land. Just near Manduria and Maruggio, the breeding grounds near the sea have favored the improvement of the qualities of this vine.
It is still cultivated with the method of the ancient Greek viticulture, that is tree sapling, a typical shape referred to as “Apulian sapling”.
In 1975 this vine, first in Puglia, obtained its recognition as Primitivo di Manduria DOC. And in 2011 came also the Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG. Another important milestone came in 1998, when the Consortium for the Protection of Primitivo di Manduria was born, which today boasts as many as 50 companies that make wine and bottle and over 1000 wine growers.
