Area Sud Ionica

The Ionian area of ​​Salento south of Lecce is one of the most beautiful areas from a naturalistic and cultural point of view. It hides priceless treasures such as the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Galatina and breathtaking stretches of coastline like Porto Selvaggio. In addition to the beauty and traditions that are largely derived from the ancient Greek colonies that arose thousands of years ago in this area, this area is very important from an enological point of view.

Cities such as Copertino, Nardò and Galatina are not only wonderful municipalities but also the names of 3 important Salento DOC. To these 3 we can also add Cutrofiano, which is not a DOC area but which, by tradition and history, is another important production area.

In this area, very high quality wines are produced, with vines such as negroamaro, fiano and primitivo above all. The red earth distinguishes the soil of this territory, allowing the production of excellent red wines and great rosé wines, but in some areas can also be found calcareous soils with many shell residues that allow the production of great white wines.

Going down to the area of ​​Gallipoli near Tuglie and Alezio there is an incredible production of rose wines that by tradition, history and culture are the most important wines in Salento.
