The Rosa del Golfowinery is based in Alezio (Lecce_Puglia/Italy). Its history began about two centuries ago when Leopoldo Calò, the forefather of the family, began to cultivate vines and olive trees in a small plot of land owned by him. Over the years, the family production of oil and wine has grown a lot. At the end of the 1930s, the grandson of Leopoldo Calò, Giuseppe, developed the idea of creating commercial subsidiaries to expand the sale of their products. Thus opened the first commercial branch in Albizzate, in the province of Varese. In this way, the family manages to distribute its products in northern Italy and France.
In 1963 the company passed to Giuseppe’s son, Mino Calò. In this period the first bottle of Rosato from the winery is produced, the well-known Rosa del Golfo which links its name to the Gulf of Gallipoli which is the backdrop to the vineyards of the estate. The bond and affection for the Gulf of Gallipoli lead Mino Calò to choose to change the company name to Rosa del Golfo.
After the untimely death of Mino Calò in 1999, the company is now run by his sons Damiano and Pamela.
Rosa del Golfo winery is located in the historic centre of the Municipality of Alezio. It uses native vines of Negroamaro, Primitivo and Black Malvasia of Lecce. The soils from which the grapes come are distributed in the territories of the municipalities of Alezio, Sannicola, Campi Salentino, Salice Salentino, Veglie and Parabita.
The emblem of this winery is the aforementioned Rosa del Golfo, which celebrated its 50th anniversary with the 2013 vintage and continues to be one of the great rosé wines of Puglia. Considered on the Gambero Rosso guide “Wines of Italy” among “the best five wines of Puglia and among the best ten in the south “. Celebrated by Gino Veronelli in 1974 and 1989 on the occasion of a report on “The best twenty wines of Italy”. Then again, in 2003 the Rosa del Golfo Vigna Mazzì won the Oscar for wine as “Best rosé of Italy” while Veronelli awarded him the Sun in the last guide written in his own hand.
