2017 was an excellent year for wines in Italy and, in particular, in Salento. A hot but not excessive vintage, fairly humid and well ventilated, which gave life to grapes of good and excellent quality. These factors, combined with the great technical and managerial progress made in recent years in the cellar Produttori di Manduria, ensured that Lirica Primitivo di Manduria DOP 2017 (one of the iconic wines produced by this company) was awarded the prestigious 3 Glasses of Gambero Rosso 2020. Added to this is an excellent evaluation by the Austrian German-language magazine Falstaff which awarded well 92 points to the Primitivo from Produttori di Manduria.
At the end of 2020 comes a further and extraordinary recognition and another great satisfaction for the winery: Lirica 2017 is was selected by the prestigious American magazine Wine Enthusiast among the best 100 wines of 2020 . This prestigious ranking is presented at the end of each year by the authoritative magazine founded a stone’s throw from New York in the now distant 1979.
The “The Enthusiast 100” ranking
The ranking of The Enthusiast 100: Our Top Wines of 2020 is the result of a year of intense and long work. A selection that starts from a total of more than 25,000 wines tasted in 12 months. Thanks to the scores drawn up by the authoritative collaborators of the magazine, we arrive at the final result of the 100 best wines of 2020.
The evaluation form of Lirica 2017 was prepared by the well-known expert and head of tastings of the magazine Alexander Peartree which awarded 91 points. Peartree described the wine as follows:
“Cohesive aromas of tilled earth, tobacco and peppery spice are well-integrated into a rich cherry jam core on the nose. This is full, rounded and juicy in feel, showing luscious fruit jam flavors that don’t falter or loose definition, thanks to lifted acidity and a firm framing of polished tannins. Tobacco, earth and violet tones bring added depth, with a cherry skin tone lingering on the close.”.
Lirica 2017 ranked at 89 place out of 100 in the general ranking, but it was the least expensive wine among all of the whole lot in this ranking. This demonstrates how in Salento (in particular in the north-western part of the Salento peninsula or the land of Manduria) it is still possible to drink wines of incredible quality and world-class at prices below € 10.
Furthermore, the Primitivo di Manduria Lirica was always included by the magazine Wine Enthusiast in the small guide on The best Italian red wines for 2020 resulting once again the best wine with a truly extraordinary quality ratio .
Lirica today is one of the few truly democratic wines. This wine allows everyone to enjoy the emotions that only one of the best Italian red wines and one of the 100 best wines in the world can give.
