A winery of ancient origins in a fortified structure of the 1500s.
The Catasto Onciario, dated to 1513, reports the news of the construction of a monastery in the countryside of Salice Salentino at the end of the fifteenth century, by a group of monks who dedicated themselves to agriculture and prayer according to the rule of St. Basil. Four centuries later, in 1865, a family of Burgundy winemakers, the Perry Graniger (forced by phylloxera to abandon their vineyards) bought the monastery and converted it into a chateau, planting ten hectares of chardonnay and ten of pinot noir. He also built the noble floor above the cellar as a family residence.
In the early 1900s, the Perry Graniger returned to France. The wine cellar was first purchased by the De Martino family, a noble family from Puglia, which was later mistaken for a property of equal value with Antonio Provenzano. Antonio translated “Chateau” into “Castello” (castle) and dedicated it to the monks who founded it. He continued planting vines and, between 1920 and 1928, built a new cellar to improve winemaking. This was a first storage cellar and today houses the Castello Monaci Wine Museum. In it are preserved finds and utensils, dating back to the mid-1900s, which tell the agricultural life and the production of wine in Salento. Also very interesting is the photographic story testimony of the journey of the vine from the Caucasus to the Mediterranean.
In 1970, Maria Provenzano and her husband Enzo Memmo, the second generation of the family, with a unique foresight, began to build the third cellar, along with a certain number of rooms to be used for wine tourism. In 1979 his daughter Lina married the Salentine agricultural entrepreneur Vitantonio Seracca Guerrieri, current President of Castello Monaci.
The wines of Castello Monaci winery are obtained mainly from native vines such as Primitivo, Negroamaro and Black Malvasia of Lecce grew in the 210 hectares of land owned. Today the winery has very modern technologies and an advanced winemaking system. The barrel room, dug out of the tuff, houses 18 French oak barrels and 1000 barriques.
